What is RSS?

A lot of sites want you to subscribe to their “RSS feed”, but not everybody knows what RSS is. So I’m going to take a minute to explain what RSS is, and why you may want to use it.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. Its a way to get news from your favorite websites delivered to you. Subscribing to an RSS feed means that a site will send you its newest content as soon as its posted.

To get started reading an RSS feed is very simple. Its basically a two step process. First, you need a feed reader. This is either a website or a program that handles all of your subscriptions. One of the most popular is bloglines.com. Once you have your Bloglines account, you go to your favorite websites and look for an icon that looks something like this:

Click on that orange icon. If you use Bloglines, you may have to click on the Bloglines icon which looks like this:
Subscribe in Bloglines

From there, its just a matter of waiting for your favorite sites to update.

If you have a Facebook profile, you can also follow us right on your main page. Click here to see our Networked Blogs profile. In the center of the page, you’ll see a screen cap of our website, and under that you should see a “Follow” button. Click that (and give us a 5 star rating while your there), and new articles published here at MAMMA-Online will show up automatically in your Friend Feed on your Facebook front page.

Now that you know what an RSS feed is, how about subscribing to ours?
