This Week in Mid-Atlantic MMA: The Day After Tomorrow Edition

See, I posted this because it snowed...a lot.
There’s an old saying, the best laid plans are not always the best plans to get you laid. Or something like that. I think it was in an Earnest Hemingway novel, or whatever. But as we all know, a nasty little weather front pushed through the region, dumping over two feet of snow in some parts of the Delaware Valley. Both local shows were postponed. PA Fighting Championships 2 was pushed back less than 24 hours, and jumped off yesterday as a 1PM matinee show in Harrisburg PA. New Breed Fighters played it a little more cautious, pushing their first show of 2010 one week. That show is now highlighted as the only relevant MMA action of the weekend. And as I Twitted on Friday, tickets labeled Feb 6th will be honored on the 13th.

PA Fighting Championships 2 – Bout Sheet
Former WWF star, and long time mixed martial arts instructor Steve Blackman waded into the promoter’s pool late last year with PA Fighting Championships 1, which from all accounts was an excellent show. Blackman returns this weekend with PAFC 2, coming out of The Zembo in Harrisburg PA. This show will again be a pro am featuring some very young fighters. Among those on the card, is Raoul Smith, who’s fighting on a short flip after a three round decision victory last weekend for VFL

This Week in Mid-Atlantic MMA Its Always Rainy in Philadelphia Edition

Khristian Geraci vs Brad Pole, Locked in the Cage 2. Photo by: Paul Miles.
This past weekend officially kicked off the 2010 fight calendar in the Philadelphia Tri-State area with Locked in the Cage 2. A lot of familiar faces were there, including Zack Lynch from MMA Photography. As soon as I see his LITC photo gallery go up, I’ll let you guys know. In the cage, Aaron Meisner broke his three fight losing streak in convincing fashion. His jiu-jitsu has come under fire recently, particularly after the first round loss to Leo Pecanha in October. But working with Team Balance is starting to pay off. Aaron was able to shut down an early double leg attempt, sprawl out and gain a dominant position. He won most of the scrambles, and was able to mont Marcus Ajian’s back and snatched the neck for the win. This was a little bit of a come to Jesus fight for Aaron. A loss would have put his record at 3-4 going into a fight in 5 weeks. Instead, he wins in front of a great hometown crowd. He gets back on the winning horse and now can start what he says will be a very active first half of 2010 with positive momentum.

Full Results: PA Fighting Championships
By all accounts, Steve Blackman pulled off a well executed event. The Zembo Shrine was packed and primed for Harrisburg’s first MMA event. Only 1 of the 13 fights that went down went to the cards, and that was a split decision. Looks like we missed a hell of a night.

This Weekend's Card (In Case You Forgot)
Just a reminder to set your TiVos and DVR’s.
Tonight
7:30 PM live in Harrisburg PA at the Zembo Shrine PA Fighting Championships
According to Ted Czech everything on the floor is sold out. You may get some tickets in the rafters.
8:00 PM from Fresno CA on Showtime Strikeforce Challengers. Great main event with Billy Evangelista fighting Jorge Gurgel. Solid undercard, as well.
Saturday
8:00 PM live from The Arena in South Philly Asylum 21. Carlos Brooks vs Mike Johnson in what could be a classic boxer vs kickboxer main event. Fights will be broadcast to the internets on GFL.
8:00 PM from Chicago IL on CBS Strikeforce Fedor vs Bret Rogers. The hype is over, time for MMA to to plant its flag in the primetime network television mountain. Excellent televised fight card with Gegard Mousasi vs Sokoudjo, Jake Shields vs Jason Miller for the vacated Middleweight belt, and obviously, the main course. Fedor vs Brett Rogers. Grab your boil and bite, that fight’s gonna hurt.
I’ll be liveblogging the Fedor vs Rogers fight. Look to your right, and you’ll see a little application hosted by Cover It Live. Set yourself a little reminder, and make sure you got your laptop close by when you settle in for the best televised fight card of the year.
Don’t forget to enter for your chance to win a copy of Phil Davis’ new DVD “On Top of the World”. Email your name, address and shirt size to mrwonderfulcontest@gawab.com. Contest ends November 6th.
