I just got home from Asylum Fight League 24 at the NJ Expo Center in Raritan NJ. If you were following the Twitter, you were getting results as they happened. But initial reaction is definitely “Wow”. Carl Mascarenhas has built himself a magnificent amateur league. I’ll tell you what I told him, amateur fights, professional production. A lot of attention to detail, from the lights & video show right on down the line.
We’ll get your official Asylum Fight League 24 results up in a couple hours, but until then, two titles were on the line. Noah Fuance defeated Pete Burdge for the 167 lbs title, I may be wrong, but this is Fuance’s third title in the AFL. And in an excellent three round battle, Julio Arce defended his 140 lbs strap against Nashville Tennessee’s Chris Wright. Other fights of note; Delroy McKoy battled Brian Natoli, and after being down on points earned a no doubt KO at 2:58 in the third round. James Jenkins made a case for KO of the Night when he spun Wesley Carvahlo like a turnstile and dropped him in the third.
Want to take a minute to recognize James Funaro, who was representing for us wearing the MAMMA-Online logo on his shorts. Funaro went up with Mike Fischetti from Tiger Schulmann MMA. Fischetti cut James on his eye brow, and the cut ended up stopping the fight. But I’m proud he had our logo on his shorts.
I want to take a second and thank Nick Lembo at the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board. He and Carl provided unprecedented access to the fights for a blogger. And with some insights from head referee Donnie Carolei and Judge Cordell Hunter, I can honestly say I now understand the sport of mixed martial arts much better than I did yesterday. I think the shadow judging program should be damn near mandatory for all MMA journalists. Cordell taught me more about the sport in about 15 minutes than you can learn by watching a month’s worth of UFC broadcasts.
Look out later on this morning for full and official results. This was the last AFL event of the year, but I spoke briefly with Carl Mascarenhas, who has some outstanding things lined up for 2010. I will keep you all posted as news starts coming out of the Asylum camp.
